GW Operational Medicine Youth Academy
The GW Operational Medicine Youth Academy (OMYA) is an intensive five-day program. You train in emergency and operational medicine at the George Washington University Training Center. You work with EMS instructors and GW physicians to build clinical skills. Training includes hands-on labs, fire station visits, and medical simulations.
OMYA is a professional identity program. You learn the foundations of emergency medicine, EMS, and fire service through rigorous training.
Daily Schedule
Certifications
You earn four professional credentials:
- AHA Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid
- ACS Stop the Bleed
- FEMA IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System
- GW OMYA Certificate of Completion
Physician Sessions
You learn directly from GW Emergency Medicine physicians:
- Field to ER: Learn how physicians receive patients from emergency teams.
- Wound Closure Lab: Practice suturing techniques under physician supervision.
- Point-of-Care Ultrasound: Use portable scanners to perform ultrasound exams.
- Career Panel: Discuss paths from EMT to physician with a professional panel.

Logistics and Policies
- Arrival: Arrive between 7:45 and 8:00 AM.
- Pickup: Pick up your student by 4:00 PM. Late pickups result in removal from the program.
- Clothing: Wear closed-toe shoes and the provided uniform shirt. Wear long pants.
- Meals: Bring a packed lunch daily. We provide water and snacks.
- Requirements: You must attend all five days to earn certifications. You must be able to perform physical tasks like chest compressions.
- Forms: Submit health and consent forms before the first day.
